The History & Care of Real Soap

5,000 years of tradition, in every bar

Ancient Alchemy

The art of soap making is one of humanity's oldest crafts, dating back to roughly 2800 BC in ancient Babylon. Legend tells of Mount Sapo in Rome, where rain washed wood ash and animal fats into the Tiber River, forming a clay-like substance that cleaned clothes with ease.

For centuries, soap remained a rare luxury. In the 7th century, Spanish and Italian artisans refined the craft using olive oil to create the famous Castile soap. It wasn't until the Industrial Revolution that soap became a household staple β€” transitioning from a gritty paste to the smooth bars we know today. By choosing handmade, you're carrying on a 5,000-year-old tradition of purity and care.

Caring for Your Natural Soap

Natural, handmade soap behaves differently from store-bought bars and lasts longer with a little extra care:

  • Keep it dry β€” use a well-draining soap dish between uses. Sitting in water makes a bar dissolve much faster.
  • Let it breathe β€” give your bar plenty of air circulation so it dries out completely between uses.
  • Use a washcloth or loofah β€” it builds a better lather and makes the bar last longer than rubbing it directly on skin.
  • Store extras in a cool, dry place β€” away from direct sunlight and humidity.
