Transferring Files with Fetch for the Macintosh

Fetch is an FTP program developed by Dartmouth Software Development for the Macintosh. Most likely you already have Fetch on your system. If not, you can download it from Macupdate.

When you open Fetch, a window will appear that says New Connection. The Host is the FTP address that you get from your ISP. Enter your user name and password. This will deliver you to the root directory of your site. A new window will appear with the name of the site at the top, a window to the left and two buttons for putting and getting files. You may also see a small window appear with a welcome message from your server.

To swap files, you need to be in the right directory. In the main window you will see some folders and files. You can navigate through these folders by double-clicking on them. Any time you want climb out of a folder, select the folder in the drop-down menu at the top. Any time an activity is happening, you will see the little Fetch dog running.

Once you have located the folder you want, uploading and downloading files is simple. By opening your local folder, you can drag and drop files. If you don't have system 7.5 or later, you will need to follow these steps:

To upload a file:

  • Choose Put File.

  • A window will appear in which you can search for the file to upload. Select the file and click OK.

  • A new window will appear asking for the format. Text should go as Text Only and Images should be sent as Binary Data.

To download a file:

  • You can double-click the file name or select the file and press the Get File button.

To transfer more than one file, go to the Remote menu option. There you will see Put Folders and Files or Get Directories and Files. By choosing Put Folders and Files, you can select a number of files from your local drive to be uploaded at once. Selecting a folder and choosing Get Directories and Files will download the entire contents of the folder.

The Fetch Help menu is pretty good and can guide you through changing directories, renaming files and understanding file formats.
