Escher Web Sketch

Not really a paint program, it allows you to draw repeating patterns in the style of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. You can select the symmetry of the patterns by, drawing tools, pattern size, pen size and color. Escher Sketch was created for designing periodic decorations. This application is a good teaching tool for the illustration of basic crystallography courses. You will need either the java run-time environment (JRE) or a java developer's kit found at http://www.javasoft.com/.

GIMP

Good paint program, with most of the options found in shareware programs like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Don't expect it to be either of the programs listed above (it was written by one person, and it's free) none the less, if you need a paint program and don't have the money for a commercial version painter, this is very good. Larry's Paint

Java applet program that allows you to make various paintings. You can draw two ways. A simple way of drawing is to use pre made images, called stamps, to put in your painting. The other way to draw, is by hand, using a coloring pen. The program comes with stamps and backgrounds, however you are able to change them to your own images.

PROFESSIONAL GRAPHICS PROGRAMS

In reply to various questions about professional (not freeware) graphics programs.

Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, and other good graphics editors are best suited to working with and editing high end graphics, scanned images, photos, line art, web graphics, etc. While not usually used to create original images, they can be.

Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand are best suited to creating original artwork, logos, CD covers, and similar items. They are also used for further refining images from Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, and other graphics editors.

Quark Express and Adobe PageMaker are best suited to putting it all together. Import Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, and/or Paint Shop Pro files/images into Quark or PageMaker and add text, arrange, set document layout, etc. Then your file is ready to be published, printed, etc.

Freehand (Not Freeware)

This program is NOT freeware. Macromedia Freehand is used for designing original artwork, logos, CD covers, and similar items on your computer. It can also be used to make flyers, documents, etc. Lots of image and text effects for creating graphics for print and the web. This has many of the features found in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe PageMaker.

This program is NOT freeware. Adobe Illustrator is used by many professional graphic artists who create original graphics for print and the web, also for further refining images from Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc. For graphic arts and desktop publishing.

This program is NOT freeware. Adobe PageMaker is the tool for professionals and non professionals who want generate page layouts for things like documents, books, posters, CD covers, menus, newsletters, flyers, and similar items. If you don't have the money to buy QuarkXpress, this is the program to get.

This program is NOT freeware. Paint Shop Pro by Jasc is recommended for people who want a professional graphics editing program but don't want to spend $500.00+ for Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop (Not Freeware)

This program is NOT freeware. Adobe Photoshop is best suited for graphics editing and the choice of most graphics professionals and home users who want to work with and edit high end graphics, scanned images, photos, line art, etc. You can crop, resize, layer, color, change contrast/brightness/hue/saturation, etc. The only negative thing about Photoshop is that there are so many options, it takes a while to learn how to learn to use all of its features effectively.

QuarkXpress (Not Freeware)

This program is NOT freeware. Quark Express is for the professional, it sets the industry standard. Used by newspapers, design shops, magazines, graphic studios, cd designers... Create documents, books, posters, CD covers, menus, newsletters, flyers, and similar items. Design entire web sites and print documents at the same time. Adobe PageMaker has many of the features found in QuarkXpress and is recommended for the person/company that can't afford Quark.

Note: Most Photoshop plug-ins can be used with Paint Shop Pro and other paint programs, and editors. Just because it is a Photoshop plug-in doesn't mean you can't use it with another paint program. Check the help file of your paint program to see if the program supports Photoshop plug-ins.
