  Blend Your Layers

Every time a person makes a change in a project I tell you to "create a new layer in Photoshop" and do something to it. But I never explain why. Today I'm taking a step back, explaining how layers work and how you can use the blend modes to your advantage.

Here are the most important Layer Blend modes and some samples. If you remember anything from today, this should be it.

Without further ado, here are the three magic modes that 80 percent of your work will be based on.

Multiply

Screen

Hardlight

Multiply

When you choose the Multiply Layer Blend option, the pixel values are multiplied together and divided by 256 (fractions multiplied together result in lower numbers). This makes things darker without any effect on white.

Screen

Screen is the inverse of Multiply. The image is lightened and black has no effect.

Hardlight

Hardlight uses both Multiply and Screen, so 50 percent Gray has no effect. Anything lighter than 50 percent Gray screens; anything darker than 50 percent Gray multiplies.

When you choose Overlay, you're choosing Hardlight with the layering order inverted. Soft Light has a softer curve. It's not linear.
