Answers to Quiz #23: Modes

1. Name the mode that is formed by writing a major scale in the following manner::

i) starting on the first note: ionian.

ii) starting on the second note: dorian.

iii) starting on the third note: phrygian.

iv) starting on the fourth note: lydian.

v) starting on the fifth note: mixolydian.

vi) starting on the sixth note: aeolian.

vii) starting on the seventh note: locrian.

 

2. Fill in the blanks:

i) An excerpt that is in 3 sharps, where 'E' is the focus, and which ends on 'E' , is in the mixolydian mode.

ii) An excerpt that is in 1 flat, where 'B-flat' is the focus, and which ends on 'B-flat', is in the lydian mode.

iii) An excerpt that is in 5 sharps, where 'C#' is the focus, and which ends on 'C#', is in the dorian mode.

iv) An excerpt that is in 3 flats, where 'D' is the focus, and which ends on 'D' is in the locrian mode.

v) An excerpt that is in 6 flats, where 'E-flat' is the focus, and which ends on 'E-flat' is in the aeolian mode.

 

3. Identify the mode of each of the following excerpts:

i) Mode: F-dorian

ii) Mode: C-lydian

iii) Mode: F-aeolian

iv) Mode: E-phrygian

v) Mode: F-ionian

NOTE: This last excerpt is in F-ionian, which is simply the F-major scale. The fact that it is in F-major usually takes precedence over the fact that it is in F-ionian. Technically, any piece of music in a major key can be said to also be in the ionian mode.
