Styles

Hip hop dancing can be basically broken down into 4 different categories.

One being B-boying or Breakdancing, another being Popping, another being Locking and the final being Uprocking.

B-boyin or Breakin consists of a few major elements. The intro is the first. This is the phase of a b-boy's routine where he enters the dancer's circle and is still standing on his feet. This can be done very differently, it depends on who's doing it. Another area of importance is the groundwork. Some people focus on just footwork (old school style) while others use footwork and powermoves. There are also those that concentrate soley on powermoves (new school players). The final element of most routines is the freeze, a sudden stop at the end of a b-boy's crazy spinning and flipping.

Popping was started in the West Coast, whereas breaking was started in the Bronx. This style has been enjoyed by everyone though, because it never gets old. Everybody (i mean tru b-boys) comes out with their own styles of the robot, egyptian, wave, tick, strobe, slow mo, etc. keeping this aspect of b-boying alive.

Locking is more of a "dance" dance. You could probably see more of this going on than breaking and popping. This style has alot of fast hand motion, kicks and steps. Uprocking is the true b-boy's dance. This is almost a fighting art because of the timing, skill and control you need to do it well. While keeping the uprock steps going, 2 b-boys will confront each other and play out a real fight. Blocks, kicks, hand strikes, knees, elbows and headbutts will be thrown but none will connect to give the illusion of a fighting dance.
