John Philip Sousa was born in 1854 in Washington, D.C. and died in 1932. The last piece he conducted before his death was his most famous march, The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Sousa is known as the March King because of the popularity of his many marches. It is impossible to go to a parade anywhere in America without hearing one of Sousa's marches. His marches are nationalistic. Sousa wants the listener to feel proud to be an American.
