Rules to Help Build a Better Movie

1. The Story is King ( It is the story that communicates )

2. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid - One Concept or Theme and One Main Conflict)

3. Know Your Concept, Theme or Meaning ( Stories have meaning. The concept is the theme or meaning of your story not the plot. )

4. Avoid Cliche ( Cliche is something so overused it does not have originality. )

5. Create a memoriable character ( Nemo, Bambi, you know what I mean. )

6. Emotion Drives Action ( A story is defined by how the character reacts to the events. )

7. Show, Don't Tell ( Telling makes use of exposition or description - showing make it clear by appearance, behavior, action, or reaction. )

8. Create Conflict ( If there is no conflict there is no ending because nothing is resolved. Remember there are only 3 kinds of conflict character vs self, another character, or the environment.)

9. Know Your Ending ( You can't tell your story unless you know how the character and hopefully the audience is transformed. )

10. Entertain Your Audience ( They are entertained when they are visually, intellectually, and emotionally engaged. )

11. Use Humor ( Most people think cartoons ( Tex Avery, Chuck Jones) when they think animation. Humor can also be parody, satire, or pathos. )

12. Do Something You Like ( If you aren't happy how can you expect the audience to be happy with your work. )
