Universal Themes

Good movies and animations are stories that have meanings. The meaning is more than the story itself. In english class we called it the theme.

Themes are often based on one of three human needs:

Physical Needs

Mental Needs

Spiritual Needs.

Within the above categories we find the needs of:

Food

Shelter

Security

Acceptance

Order

Stimulous

and of course

Love.

It is not the movies' objective to have the audience leave the movie yelling "What a great theme." Sometimes you have to look for it. If the story is good the audience will unconsciously find the theme.

Some examples are:

Ice Age - Families stick together

Incredibles - Families stick together

Aristocats - Families stick together

The Incredible Journey - Families stick together

Watch some good movies and find the theme. You'll find many will have a lot in common.
